There is nothing more uncomfortable than neck stiffness that becomes neck pain. In most cases, there is no cause for panic. However, some neck pain can be a sign of something more serious. It’s important to know when neck pain can be a symptom of an underlying condition.

What is Causes Neck Stiffness?

A stiff neck is characterized by soreness and difficulty moving the neck. Furthermore, turning your head to the side is especially painful with a stiff neck. Stiffness can be accompanied by headaches and arm or shoulder pain too.

Typically, a person will have to turn their whole body to the side, because the neck is unable to swivel to look to the side. And depending on the cause, stiffness can last for a few days. Extreme pain and limiting stiffness should get immediate medical attention.

Red Flag Symptoms with Neck Pain

Neck stiffness is commonly caused by strains and sprains. If the cause is something else, additional symptoms will be present. These red flag symptoms are important to watch for. They may appear before or at the same time as stiffness.

Fever, a sign that your body is fighting infection:

  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Headache, especially if different to typical headaches you have
  • Fatigue or unexplained drowsiness
  • Coordination issues, such as trouble walking
  • Confusion or mood swings
  • Unexplained weight loss

Conditions Associated with Neck Stiffness

You should seek medical attention if you notice any the following:

There are a few conditions known to accommodate or cause a stiff neck. Of these, meningitis is the most dangerous and is a serious bacterial infection. The protective membranes in the spinal cord and brain become inflamed.

Along with a stiff neck, you can also experience fever and headache. You will not be able to move your head forward (nuchal rigidity). Should any two of these symptoms appear, see your doctor right away.

The symptoms for meningitis appear within days of exposure. Your health condition can change gradually or suddenly. Early treatment is necessary for a better outcome. Delaying treatment can result in hearing loss, brain damage, or death.

Other conditions associated with neck stiffness include:

Spinal infection: Infections other than meningitis can attack the spinal cord.

Spinal tumor: A tumor on the spine can accuse a stiff neck. However, a tumor in the brain can also cause stiffness. And this is especially true if located at the cerebellum.

Cervical dystonia: A neurological disorder can cause uncontrollable neck spasms. Your head can end up stuck in positions outside of normal alignment. This is also known as a form of torticollis.

You know, you cant make 100% of people happy 100% of the time. I get that. Sometimes I have gotten frustrated at SOC because of lack of communication... however when I expressed my concerns, I have had my issues fixed right away and I get calls from office managers to understand the situation and make sure mistakes don't happen again. To me that is excellence. I also LOVE Gangavalli he's super cool and explains everything so thoroughly... I am having surgery soon, and I cant fully express how awesome it is to feel so confident in my surgeon... Thanks SOC for always looking for ways to improve and for making me feel heard, and comfortable. :)read more
