Exercise with a Physical Therapist for Pain Relief

Exercise with a Physical Therapist for Pain Relief

It’s certainly interesting how things have changed over the years when it comes to exercising with pain! If you were to visit your physician a decade ago complaining of back pain, you would most likely be bedridden with your back immobilized. However, nowadays this has been shown to have been an ineffective way of recovery. As a matter of fact, research has proven that inactivity actually weakens the muscles. And by weakening the muscles, this can prolong the recovery or even worsen certain conditions. Boy, have we been doing this all wrong!

However, the best way to treat pain is through exercise. Exercising not only increases muscle flexibility and strength but also promotes healing by increasing blood flow to the injury. Strong muscles supply protection to bones and joints.

It’s always important to check with your orthopedic or physician regarding a treatment plan. Nevertheless, many doctors will prescribe physical therapy to you for rehabilitation. It can be difficult attempting to heal on your own. Therefore, with the help of a physical therapist, they are able to provide the patient with pain relief through rehabilitation and education. Which we now know, is critical for a successful recovery!

Why Seek Physical Therapy

• A physical therapist will help create an individualized treatment plan

• PT will help you build the right muscles to help relieve pain and discomfort

• To learn which exercises promote healthy healing and how to keep those muscles strong

Now we understand why exercise is important for pain relief. However, there is also pain which comes with exercising. After a tough workout, the physical therapist might include applying ice and heat packs, Ultrasound and electrical muscle stimulation for pain relief.

A Physical Therapist Exercise Program

For a physical therapist to create your personal workout program, they will properly evaluate physical capabilities, movement, and activity levels. However, depending on the condition and diagnoses, a physical therapist may provide a customized exercise program. This program will be based on research for the most effective exercises.

Typically, when creating an individualized exercise program, the patient might encounter a physical therapist using trial and error methods. In PT they use these methods to see what the injured site can handle. It is normal for physical therapy to be slightly pushed beyond what you can handle. Pushing the muscles capability is used to strengthen the muscles around the injury and promote proper healing.

You know, you cant make 100% of people happy 100% of the time. I get that. Sometimes I have gotten frustrated at SOC because of lack of communication... however when I expressed my concerns, I have had my issues fixed right away and I get calls from office managers to understand the situation and make sure mistakes don't happen again. To me that is excellence. I also LOVE Gangavalli he's super cool and explains everything so thoroughly... I am having surgery soon, and I cant fully express how awesome it is to feel so confident in my surgeon... Thanks SOC for always looking for ways to improve and for making me feel heard, and comfortable. :)read more

Dr. Sahai is hands down the best surgeon around. He has worked with me through my herniated disc treatment. I could not ask for a more detailed... doctor. He has carefully explained each procedure into detail for me to fully understand so i can make the best decision for myself. I am now 2 months post -surgery and on my way to 100% pain free thanks to him! Dr. Sahai is a miracle worker! A++++read more
