Lower Right Back Pain That Requires Immediate Medical Attention

Lower Right Back Pain That Requires Immediate Medical Attention
Back Painback pain

Back pain can be caused by something as simple as a pulled muscle. However, in some cases, back pain can be a sign of a more serious problem. Lower right back pain that does not go away or that has no obvious cause can be concerning. Although there are some cases where it is necessary to seek medical attention right away.

The symptoms you do not want to ignore include:

Retention of urine or loss of bladder control:

Any changes in bladder control can indicate damages to your spinal column. Damage to the nerves that travel from the spinal cord to your bladder (cauda equine) often causes incontinence, reduced urinary sensation, inability to pass urine, and poor urine stream. Symptoms can start slowly and will worsen as the spinal cord becomes more compressed. A compressed cauda equine is known as conus medullaris syndrome and can progress to the lower body causing paralysis is untreated.

Saddle anesthesia:

When the slower spinal cord or cauda equine becomes compressed, a numbness called saddle anesthesia can develop. Numbness has been known to occur in the groin, inner thighs, genital area, and buttocks. This condition is also commonly accompanied by sexual dysfunction as well as numbness during intercourse and pain in one or both legs.

Abdominal and side pain:

When your lower back pain is also accompanied by abdominal and side pain you may have a more serious condition. A potentially life-threatening condition known as an abdominal aortic aneurysm. This causes the aorta to bulge out increasing pressure in the abdominal area. The pain can be vague at first. However, will progress into a sharper pain as the aorta continues to bulge and press against the spine.

In addition to these serious conditions, there are a number of anatomic irregularities that can also cause lower right back pain. An inflamed or ruptured appendix causes lower back pain, depending on its location. However, because of the dangers of a ruptured appendix, this would also warrant immediate medical attention.

How To Spot An Emergency

Unknown back pain that is accompanied by fever, nausea, vomiting, or unexplained weight loss needs immediate medical attention. If there are changes in mental health or increased anxiety or confusion, a spinal tumor could be present. This requires urgent attention and prompt treatment.

If your back pain does not go away on its own or gets worse, talk to your doctor right away. If the symptoms occur at night go to an emergency room. These symptoms can indicate a life-threatening emergency.

You know, you cant make 100% of people happy 100% of the time. I get that. Sometimes I have gotten frustrated at SOC because of lack of communication... however when I expressed my concerns, I have had my issues fixed right away and I get calls from office managers to understand the situation and make sure mistakes don't happen again. To me that is excellence. I also LOVE Gangavalli he's super cool and explains everything so thoroughly... I am having surgery soon, and I cant fully express how awesome it is to feel so confident in my surgeon... Thanks SOC for always looking for ways to improve and for making me feel heard, and comfortable. :)read more
